At the time, the Ragtime R640S (and the R620S) were said to be the only the ONLY "Maccaferri" or D-hole (factory-produced) guitar on the market that had an internal resonator (sound box). The Ragtime Special guitars were the result of a collaboration between Ibanez and Mario Maccaferri at the end of the 1970s. The Ragtime guitars also feature a special fingerboard extension (24 frets) to give four full octaves of range, on the high end. The guitars were designed with a special body shape, hand-shaped parallel spruce bracing, and with an oval sound “D-Hole” for superior projection. Ibanez made these Ragtime Special’s for fingerpicking, and more specifically, ragtime/gypsy jazz players. Headstock, is a thin veneer of rosewood, over flamed maple, with authentic abalone and mother of pearl inlays. it looks like glue, and with vigorous scrubbing, does come off, but with my limited cleaning supplies, I am opting to not accidentally ruin the finish, with my amateur hands.īack & Sides: Goregous Flamed Maple “Japanese Style” Veneer Archback There is also, some sort of residuals left here and there on the front and back of the guitar. Looks like it would either completely buff out, or almost totally buff out. Finish is great except for a small spot inside the cutaway. Would be perfect to send to a luthier for have it all setup exactly as you want it, from the getgo. How you see it, is how it left the factory. As you can see in the picture, there are no tuners, nut, bridge, pins (pin holes) serial #, labels, or stamps. Was sold as one of the prototype builda for the R640s, that was purchased from a Japanese estate.
